Ganado residents may see property tax drop

Some Ganado residents may see a slight drop in school-related property taxes thanks to a budgetary decision made last week by the GISD Board of Trustees.
The school property tax rate will be the same as last year at $1.1995 for people living in the Ganado Independent School District. Property taxes will make up a sizable share of the revenue in the 2014-15 GISD budget, accounting for $4.4 million of the $8.5 million total revenue.
The budget was unanimously approved during a regular meeting on June 26 by GISD Board of Trustees shortly after a public hearing. No one from the public spoke during the hearing.
Interim Superintendent John Hardwick said the reduction in revenue was due to a change in state revenue and local revenue per student. The budget is based on preliminary values the district receives in May from the Jackson County Appraisal Office. Hardwick said the district may have to adjust the overall tax rate in July.
