Edna ISD to open DAEP campus

The old Stephen F. Austin campus will be reopened with a new purpose after Edna ISD board members approved opening a Disciplinary Alternative Education Program at the former elementary campus. At the June 16 regular board meeting Superintendent Robert O’Connor said currently students are going to Port Lavaca for DAEP and it costs the district about $50,000 to send three students to Port Lavaca. Having the students in Edna will cost about the same, but will allow the district to have more control and not have to pay for transportation of the students. O’Connor told board members he also thought it would be a good idea to have adult literacy classes at the campus for parents who do not know how to speak English very well. The board will consider other uses for the campus.
Also, Edna Independent School District students overall have made some significant gains on STAAR and EOC scores, but scores are still not where the board and teachers would like to see them.
Director of Curriculum and Instruction Nancy Sandlin, Deborah Mayer, principal of Edna Elementary, Edna Junior High Principal Paul Fleener and Edna High School Principal Demetric Wells all gave reports on State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness and End-Of-Course assessment scores. Several students are struggling in some areas, mostly in English, according to a few board and faculty members.
