Be careful when burning

Jackson County residents are being asked to be cautious when burning because of dry conditions and the wind. A burn ban was considered by commissioners during Jackson County Commissioners’ Court on May 12.
Jackson County Judge Dennis Simons said the drought index on May 9 was 556 and dropped to 521 on May 12 after the county received a small amount of rain over the weekend. He said anytime the drought index is 500 and over it raises a level of concern.
Jackson County commissioners considered a burn ban, but chose not to issue one. Simons said more rain is expected this week.
He said if anyone plans to burn a pasture or large pile they should call a dispatcher at 782-3541 to give them a heads up. Alerting emergency officials will help control burns.
