Maidens give great effort

The Ganado Maidens played the Pettus War Eagles on Monday, Feb. 10, and won 73-37.
Taylor Mirelez scored 29 points, four offensive rebounds, seven defensive rebounds, a steal and an assist, and Ashley Bridges scored 21 points, three offensive rebounds, eight defensive rebounds, two blocks, four steals and two deflections. Valeria Garcia scored eight points, two offensive rebounds, a defensive rebound and a block, and Ashley Allen scored seven points, an offensive rebound and three defensive rebounds. Sarah Novak scored six points, an offensive rebound, a steal and seven assists, and Cheyenne Galindo scored two points and a defensive rebound. Sierra Salazar earned a defensive rebound, a block, two steals and two assists, and Lizzie Callis had three defensive rebounds. Emma Weschler added an offensive rebound and Jordan Banda added a steal.
The Ganado Maidens played Port Aransas in a playoff game at Woodsboro on Thursday, Feb. 13, and lost, 33-45.
“We had opportunities to win but we could not make plays when we needed, we are a good team striving to become great,” said Coach Bryan Branch. “Many opposing coaches commented on how hard we play.”
Bridges scored 25 points, three offensive rebounds, five defensive rebounds, a block, three steals and an assist, and Garcia scored five points, two offensive rebounds, three defensive rebounds and a deflection. Salazar scored two points, an offensive rebound and a steal, and Mirelez scored a point, three offensive rebounds, three defensive rebounds and a steal. Novak earned two defensive rebounds and two steals, and Weschler added an offensive rebound. Allen added three offensive rebounds, four defensive rebounds and a steal.
“This was a fun group to coach, they always gave great effort,” said Branch of the Ganado Maidens. “We have some good young talent but they have big shoes to fill and will have to play a bigger role next year. It’s very sad to not have our seniors next year and see them get excited about the potential of these young kids,” he said. “They’ll be missed.”
