BASTROP – To have a chance to upset the No. 8 team in the state Thursday, the Edna Cowboys knew they would have to play mistake-free football.
So when Edna had a first and goal at the Cameron Yoe 8 in the closing minute of the first quarter, the Cowboys seemed poised to take advantage. But DeOntae Jones’ touchdown run was wiped off the board because of an Edna penalty.
Edna turned the ball over on downs shortly thereafter and didn’t get another good scoring chance until the score was 45-0. Cameron Yoe ended up winning 59-20. The loss ended the Cowboys season.
“We had some missed chances in the first half,” said Edna coach Mike Pierce. “We had a dropped touchdown reception and had a touchdown called back because of a penalty. Cameron Yoe took advantage. We couldn’t afford to make mistakes like that against a good football team."
