Cowboys lasso Blue Jays for win

The Edna Cowboys open their season on the road August 30th rolling past the Needville Blue jays. The Cowboys won the coin toss and deferred to the 2nd half. The first play went for a loss of 2 yards as David John Kallus made his way into the Bluejay back field to make the first tackle of the game. The tenacious Senior led Cowboy defense forces a three and out on the Blue jays first possession. Needville recovered the punt after it was touched by Edna giving the Blue jays another opportunity, as they set up their offense in Cowboy territory. The Blue jays continued to test the run defense of the Cowboys and pick up a couple of first downs before Darnelius Norman sacked the Blue jay QB and forced a turnover on downs. The Cowboy offense took over deep in their own territory for
their first offense possession with 6:00 left in the first Cowboys were forced to punt on their first possession. Special teams came up big once again for the Blue jays as they recovered a blocked punt on the 15 yard line of Edna with 4:28 left in the first. Needville was able to capitalize and scored the first touchdown of the game on the ground from 3 yards out. PAT was converted making the score 7-0 with 3:13 left. The Cowboys 2nd offense possession started the same as their first behind strong running by Marquis Broussard and Austin Kelly. The first quarter came to an end with Needville leading 7-0.
The 2nd quarter the Cowboys found the endzone as M. Broussard ran in from 2 yards out. PAT was blocked and the score remained 7-6 with 11:55 left in the 2nd. Continued strong Cowboy defensive play forced another Blue jay punt. Edna's M. Broussard returned the punt for a 60 yard touch down followed by a 2 pt conversion by Sam Sanchez making the score 14-7 in favor of the Cowboys with 3:30 left. The first half came to an end with score remaining 14-7.
Edna received 2nd half kick off but failed to carry over the offensive momentum they had at the end of the first half. Cowboys were forced to punt on the first possession of the 2nd half. The Cowboy defense, on the other hand, picked up right were they left off continuing to shut down the Blue jay offense. The score remained 14-7 in favor of Edna at the end of the 3rd.
Edna opened the 4th qtr with a 5 yard TD run from M. Broussard with a PAT by Isaac Shelton to make the score 21-7 in favor of Edna with 11:51 left in the 4th. The next Blue jay offensive possession failed to be productive as Ross Novian intercepted a pass with 4:52 left in the game. The Cowboy offense got rolling once again on the ground. A. Kelly ran in for the TD from 5 yards out to make the score 27-7 in favor of Edna with 2:10 left. PAT was no good. Needville scored once more with 1:17 left in the game, making the final score 27-14 giving the Edna Cowboys a victory in their season opener. Cowboys will continue non district play with the first home game on September 6 with Refugio Bobcats.
