Good things happening around here

The Jackson County Chamber of Commerce hosted a “Business to Business” breakfast last Tuesday and I must say, it was definitely worth getting up an hour early to be there.
This was the second “breakfast” led by the Chamber’s Economic Development committee. It began at 7 a.m. and that is a bit early for me to be dressed. I usually stay in my jammies until the last minute before I have to get to work. There were about 15 other early birds who got themselves up and about to listen to what is happening in our county.
Dan Martino gave an update on the happenings at Inteplast. It sounds like they are growing and expanding, unlike many other states across our great nation, Texas businesses are doing well. He said that Inteplast has acquired new plants across the country, but Jackson County remains the core of the operation. They now total more than 5,000 employees overall.
U.S. Congressman Blake Farenthold and two of his staff were there as well. It was nice to see that he took the time to attend the breakfast and spend some time with his constituents.
State representative Phil Stephenson was also there and gave some good-natured ribbing about balanced budgets to Farenthold. Both Farenthold and Stephenson gave short updates on what was going on in our nation and state capitals.
Edna City Manager Ken Knight also had good economic news about the City of Edna. He said more building permits had been issued for the city in the past year than in the last three years combined. That is definitely good news for a town with a housing shortage. He mentioned that a few new teachers changed their minds about moving here after difficulty finding a home.
Knight also told of an assisted living facility and expanded day care facility that were also in the works.
All this is good news to a small community like ours. If you listen to the national news, the economic information always seems to be discouraging – no jobs, businesses going under, people out of work. This isn’t the case in Jackson County, Texas. It’s exciting to be a part of all the good things going on.
Your Chamber of Commerce is alive and well and through its Economic Development Committee, is working hard to attract new businesses and industry in our county and support the ones we have. If you aren’t a member of the Chamber, I would encourage you to join. Together we can help Jackson County grow and prosper.
