Alton Harris

    Retired Master Sgt. Alton Ray “Jobbie” Harris of Edna passed away Friday, Aug. 9 at the age of 79. He was born Nov. 25, 1933, in Edna to the late Bertho and Rose Mae Carmichael Harris.
    Alton retired from the United States Marine Corps with 27 years of service. During his time in service, he received The Rifle Expert Badge, Pistol Supershooter Badge., National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry, Meritorious Mast, Good Conduct Medal, Certificate of Appreciation, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal and the Humanitarian Service Medal. He was a loving companion, brother, stepfather, godfather, uncle, and friend who will be missed dearly.
    He is survived by his companion; Irvy Stroude; sister Ada Harris Reed from Columbiana, Ala. and Rose Marie Bolden of San Antonio; and step-daughters, Tessie Davis of Phoenix City, Ala. and Burnadette Jackson of Oceanside, Calif. He is also survived by a number of grandchildren and great grandchildren and many nephews and nieces.
    Alton is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Flowrelle Harris; step-son, Jerry Avery; and brother, Billy James “Tiny” Harris.
    Visitation will be on Saturday, Aug. 17 from 11 a.m. - noon with a funeral service at noon at Oaklawn Funeral Home in Edna. Burial will follow in Chase Cemetery in Edna. Rev. Billy Joe Barns will be officiating.
    Pallbearers will be Rodney Reed, Ricky Aldridge, Billie Joe Jones, Harold Jones, Jimmy Lee Jones Sr. and Jerome Avery. Honorary pallbearers will be all American Legion Members of Post 346.
    Arrangements are under the direction of Oaklawn Funeral Home in Edna 361-782-2221.
