Linda Cavender

 

A memorial service to celebrate the life of Linda Martin Cavender was held at 11 a.m., July 6 at First United Methodist Church of Somerville with Rev. Victoria Simons officiating.  Linda died Tuesday, July 2, 2013 at the College Station Medical Center.
She was born Nov. 5, 1944 in Nacogdoches, the daughter of Cecil Eugene and Jewell Beatrice (Davis) Martin. She graduated from Edna High School and went to Sam Houston State Teachers College where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in education. Linda was a dedicated teacher whose career spanned a total of 29 years. She taught children in Brenham, Aldine and Kline Independent School Districts and she taught for the Somerville I.S.D. for 22 years until her retirement in May of 2001, almost all of those years at the elementary school. Linda was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority, the Brenham Area Retired School Personnel Chapter, and the “Saucy Old Broads” Somerville chapter of the Red Hat Society. Linda was a beloved teacher to her ex-students and a genuine friend who cared about others. She loved animals and made friends easily because of the interest she showed. She was a faithful attendee at the First United Methodist Church in Somerville and attended and participated in all of their activities. 
Linda is preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Michael “Mike” Cavender in 1992.  
She is survived by her daughter, Amy Cavender of Austin; her mother-in-law, Tommie Cavender of Shawnee Mission, Kan.; cousins, Janie Dameron of Austin, Jerry Ann Davis of Beaumont, and Mary Williams of Edna; best friends, Mackie Meyer of Somerville and Bunny Schomburg of Ganado. 
Family members have requested that memorials, in Linda’s name, be made to First United Methodist Church General Fund, P. O. Box 276, Somerville, TX 77879 or to PAAWS-Tx, P.O. Box 333, Lyons, TX 77863.
Linda’s wish was to be cremated and buried next to Mike and Amy is honoring that wish. Arrangements have been entrusted to Strickland Funeral Home in Somerville.
