Staff Writer,
Shelley Dominguez, Industrial ISD director of curriculum and instruction, gave the NCLB comprehensive needs report to Industrial ISD board members at their April 8 regular meeting.
“Many of our campus teams has spent time meeting and discussing the information that is here and you will see the bullets of the different databases that we’ve used in order to put this together,” she said. “Basically, this is a tool to evaluate the district’s effectiveness in eight different areas. This sort of shows a snapshot of our district. It’s an overall picture of what we look like in these different areas.”
Demographic information was the first area Dominguez gave a review on. She read out some of the list of strengths and needs for each area in the comprehensive needs report. Dominguez said Industrial ISD has a low staff turnover rate, a low student per teacher ratio, high attendance rates in the district, a zero percent drop out rate and high four year graduation rate.
“When I speak about the low turnover rate or the high graduation rate, I’m comparing that to state averages,” she said.
She said on the needs side, the district should investigate the overrepresentation of Hispanics and special ed students and continue any promotion of offering AP and dual credit courses. Dominguez said Industrial’s demographics were very strong.
She said the next area is staff quality, recruitment and retention. She said the district has experienced teachers and 100 percent highly qualified staff.
“We want to make sure in our staff development that we continue investigate and provide high quality staff development for our staff,” Dominguez said.
Another area is family and community involvement. She said the new Industrial ISD website is user friendly. Dominguez said the Industrial Education Foundation helps the teachers and bringing awareness out to the community of what the board and faculty is doing at Industrial ISD. She said Industrial has a high level of community and parent support. There also is high participation during parent/teacher conferences and open houses.
She said the district needs to work on improving parent participation for economically disadvantaged students. Dominguez said students tend to do well when their parents participate in school activities.
The fourth area is school context and organization. Said the district has high student achievement in a wide variety of areas. The district also has top financial ratings.
Dominguez said Industrial ISD needs to work on technology access, updating its auditorium and facilities and to continue to provide low class sizes.
Other areas are culture and climate, technology, curriculum, instruction and assessment and student achievement.
The board also accepted the resignation of Angela Karl, Industrial Elementary East kindergarten teacher; Billie Grymes, Industrial Junior High School English teacher; Debbie Littlefield, elementary reading interventionist and Virginia Karl, Industrial Junior High School history teacher.
