Students honor teacher

A teacher’s efforts to educate future generations often goes unnoticed, but Ganado Elementary School’s Clara Connor was recognized on Feb. 15 during a ceremony in which State Representative Phil Stephenson presented her with a Texas flag that was flown at the Texas State Capitol.
The ceremony was all made possible by three fifth grade students.  Luke Bearden, 11, Elias Ayala, 11 and Cole Armstrong, 10 thought it would be a nice surprise for Connor, who is their social studies teacher. The students are friends of Kathy Schoeneberg who knows many of the representatives and Governor Rick Perry through her work as executive director of Texas Organization of Residential Care Homes. Schoeneberg gave them the idea of having Stephenson present the flag to their teacher.
“She’s made a big impact on all of our lives because she is so nice to all of us,” Armstrong said.
“She is very nice and always teaches us good things in social studies and I never knew that I liked social studies until Mrs. Connor,” Bearden said. “That’s my favorite class.”
Connor said she didn’t have a clue what the students were planning for her. The students never spoke a word about it in class.
“They tracked me down one day and they said ‘We have a surprise for you and we want you to have a flag that was flown at the capitol and Representative Stephenson is going to come and present it to you’” Connor said. “I was very surprised.”
