Ganado council considers wells

The Ganado City Council decided to strongly caution a local family against disconnecting from the public water system in favor of their own drilled well. The decision came after a lengthy discussion at the Feb. 12 monthly meeting.
Chris and Lauren Hajovsky, who live on Barbara St., requested a variance to hook up to their private well, said Darrell Tise, public works director. He said the couple felt their well water was better than the city’s.
“The city does have some minor rust issues,” Tise said. “Especially when we flush lines. But the quality of the water is good. Just because your well water looks clear doesn’t mean that it doesn’t have any contaminants in it.”
Gary Olson, city attorney, said from a legal standpoint the city has a duty to provide them safe and potable water.
“There is no reason for them no to connect to city water,” he said. He added if council approved the variance that the Hajovskys would need to sign a waiver.
Mayor Clinton Tegeler concurred.
“I would hate to start a precedence,” he said. “The line would have to be physically cut and we would have to remove the meter. They cannot be hooked up to both, there can be no blending of water.”
