Mr. and Mrs. Chad Starry of Kerrville announce the engagement and forthcoming marriage of their daughter Melyn Kate Stary to 2nd Lt. Jacob T. Yaklin, USMC, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Yaklin of Kingsville. The bride-elect is the granddaughter of Dan and Becky Stary of Edna. She is a 2013 graduate of Kaufer High School and a May 2017 graudate of Texas A&M University-College Station. The prospective groom is a 2012 graduate of H.M. King High School and a 2015 graduate of Texas A&M University-College Station. The couple will exchange vows on July 8, 2017 at First Baptist Church in Kingsville.

The St. Agnes Catholic Daughters treated the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office with sandwiches and other lunch items on April 6 as a show of appreciation for all they do to protect Jackson County. John and Olivia Jarratt of Edna announce the engagement and forthcoming marriage of their daughter, Justine Lea Jarratt, to Jacob Daniel Wells, son of Charles and Linda Wells of Boerne. The bride-elect is a cum laude graduate of University of Houston/Victoria and is employed at Coastal Title Company in Edna. The prospective groom is a graduate of Texas State University and is employed by Alamo Concrete. The couple will exchange vows on April 8, 2017 at The Sanctuary in Edna.

Joe and Sheryl Fabrygel of Hallettsville announce the engagement and forthcoming marriage of their daughter, Bethany Leigh Fabrygel of Sunnyvale, Calif. to Vivek Venkatraman of Sunnyvale, Calif., son of Ananth and Shoba Venkatraman of Corpus Christi. The bride-to-be attended Industrial and Edna schools and is a 2007 graduate of Edna High School. In 2011 Bethany graduated from Texas A&M of College Station with a Bachelor of Science degree. In 2015 she received a Doctor of Optometry degree from Pennsylvania College of Optometry. She is currently employed as an optometrist at LensCrafters in Capitola, Calif. The prospective groom is a 2007 graduate of Mary Carroll High School in Corpus Christi and a 2011 Texas A&M University graduate from College Station with a degree in marketing. He is employed with Airbnb in San Francisco, California as an experience designer.

Freddie and Jane Lopez of Edna celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on Feb. 10. Freddie is a retired bus driver and mechanic at Edna ISD and Janie retired as a hair dresser at Mac’s Beauty Salon in Edna. The couple has four children, Nancy Shaffer of Edna, Carol Lopez of Houston, Fred Lopez of Austin, and the late Carlos Lopez; grandchildren Alicia Sparkman of Inez, Rockne Shaffer of Edna, Jon Ryon Lopez, Brooke Lopez of Spring, and Brandon Lopez of Spring; and three great-grandchildren.

Pete Sertuche Jr. and Kristi James of Edna announce their engagement and forthcoming marriage. The bride-elect is the daughter of Wayne James of Edna and Cindy James of Michigan. She is a 2005 graduate of Edna High School and is a certified nurse at Coastal Skin Care and Wellness Center in Victoria. The prospective groom is the son of Pete and Mary Linda Sertuche of Edna. He is a 2001 graduate of Edna High School and has an associate of applied science degree from TSTC in Waco. He is currently a full time student at University of Houston-Victoria. The couple will exchange vows at 2 p.m. on Dec. 31, 2016 at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church in Victoria. 

Larry and Carrie Folmar of Edna announce the engagement and forthcoming marriage of their daughter Jaclyn Annette Folmar to Stephen Matthew Lundstrom, son of Larry and Chris Lundstrom of Edna. The bride-elect is a 2011 graduate of Edna High School, a 2013 graduate of The Victoria College with an Associate of Science degree and a 2016 graduate of University of Houston-Victoria with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree. She is employed as management staff at O’Sullivan Radiology in Victoria. The prospective groom is a 2010 graduate of Edna High School. He attended Texas State Technical School in Waco and is employed as a systems technician at Formosa Plastics in Point Comfort. The couple will exchange vows at 4 p.m. , Dec. 17, 2016 at The Sanctuary in Edna.

    Many early Texas pioneers settled in Jackson County and their descendants remain in the area.  
  

    Jesse Pumphrey was such a settler. Pumphrey (b. 1827, d. 1909) is pictured here with his daughter, Lavonia Pumphrey Laughter (back, left), her daughter, Alma Laughter Manly (back, right), and Alma’s daughter, Marion Manley Kuntz.  Jesse’s son, Murus Pumphrey, married Mattie Simons, thus bonding with another area pioneer family. Mattie Meade Pumphrey, “Miss Meadie,” beloved Edna school teacher, was a child of Murus and Mattie. 
    

    Mattie Simons Pumphrey was born to Milam Travis Simons, whose father was Capt. Thomas Simons. Captain Simons was born in 1794 in England, eventually settling in Texana, via Nova Scotia. He is described as a navigator, sea captain, and pioneer citizen.                                                                                                                      

   Keith and Michele Orsak of Edna announce the engagement and forthcoming marriage of their daughter, Whitney Orsak to Kody Taylor, son of Tim and Tricia Taylor of Jourdanton.

   The bride-elect is a registered nurse at Houston Methodist Hospital. The prospective groom is a controller at Contractors Building Supply.

   The couple will exchange vows at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 22 at The Sanctuary in Edna.

   J.C. and Lynly Camp of Victoria announce the engagement and forthcoming marriage of their daughter, Jenalyn Camp, to Carl Sheblak, son of Marcus and Kim Sheblak of Edna.
   The bride-elect is the granddaughter of David and Ruth Huebner and Carol Camp, all of Victoria, and the late Malcolm Camp. She is a 2013 graduate of Victoria West High School in Victoria. She is employed as a certified groomer at PetSmart in Victoria.
   The prospective groom is the grandson of Jennie Sheblak of Edna and the late Robert Sheblak, and Roy and Susie Latimer of Victoria. He is a 2009 graduate of Edna High School and is employed by Efficiency Air in Edna as an air conditioning technician.
   The couple will exchange vows on Dec. 3, 2016 at The Springs in New Braunfels.
